When I did my foundation course at Camberwell, although I was serving the rich and wealthy tiny moreish canapés in the palaces and the posh places of London, I wasn’t earning enough to think about spending on art materials. But it worked well for me. Off I went to the chandelier showroom and to the gong bath lady and they each gave me heaps of polystyrene packaging that they would have chucked otherwise. I got the bus across the river with my mass amount of recycled packaging to do my art performances on the Mall. Little did I know at the time, a camera on legs isn’t allowed on such a royal street so our video was stopped mid-performance by a policeman on horseback. But ah, the police boot shot… So good…!

<aside> 🌿 Use recycled materials! Or regenerative ones like bamboo, straw, hemp… Try not to use new materials as much as possible. Go mono which means using materials with one component rather than lots - think wood rather than MDF. If you make your art with lighter materials it will be less impactful when you transport it and, same principal if you transport unframed or unstretched works. Document everything using the GCC Artwork Documentation Template for future reference.
