Toolkits, toolkits, toolkits. A toolkit: those containers you keep your hammer and screwdriver in in case you need to put up a picture or make a table. You might also have a “having a good day” toolkit - those things to pull out the bag in case you’re stuck in procrastination mode or woke up feeling a bit glum - tools like going for a walk or calling a friend or dancing naked or having a nap.
You have found yourself at the GCC Artist Toolkit. What you’ll find in this one are the tools to use when making decisions that can help you align with a greener, calmer, more balanced world.
It might be thinking about how to make your sculpture out of something compostable, or how best to transport your canvasses, or how to have a conversation with your gallerist about having more time and budget to make your processes more sustainable… These points shouldn’t be a hindrance in terms of making artwork, but are here to inspire!
<aside> 🌏 On each page, you’ll generally find a little anecdote, a picture and some top toolkit tips. Click through to the next page by finding the highlighted word on each page, in this case, click “inspire” at the end of the last paragraph or click the “next page” link at the bottom of each page.

My name is Helen Wilson, I am an artist and I was commissioned to create an artwork that would present all the points and top tips from the GCC Artist Toolkit in a different, more digestible format. The format I’ve chosen is a meandering journey through anecdotes and experiences written in reference to the points in the toolkit. They are stories that are rooted in my life as an artist and a person who is always trying to go slower, calm down and connect to things.
The Artists’ Toolkit has been a collaborative endeavour led by the people from the GCC below as well as a broad range of collaborators, check it out on our Sociogram!
