There was a woman who used to use the front area outside our flat by the leaky bike shed to sort through all the things that she’d collected from the street and outside charity shops before they opened in the morning. She’d take what she wanted to the market to sell and leave the rest for us to sort out. She once left us a computer - like a tower unit from the 90s or 2000s which no-one would have wanted and would be worth very little. I picked up this mass of metal, the weight of it making me use my abs and hobbled with it to the pavement for the council to pick up. And I thought to myself, how is this possible? Surely this amount of weight, of material, of technological advancement, of skill to make must have some value to it…?
<aside> 💻 For those working in the digital world, the biggest thing you can do is to minimise the number of devices you buy and keep them for as long as possible. Instead of buying new stuff, rent, share or buy second hand. Most of the digital things we do isn’t as impactful as things like flying although bitcoin and making NFTs have a more negative impact on the environment.
