One of the best days of my life was spent at a Tilbury port recycling facility east of London on the Thames. It was a day organised by Focal Point Gallery where we had a tour of the facility by the operations manager, we walked around all the piles of different types of metal, we then got to go up a very tall crane and visit the Seafarer’s Centre for a cup of tea. It was quite something to see all the bits of London’s metal all piled up high. It gets sorted and then most of it gets shipped to Turkey where it gets transformed into metal rods to build offices and then shipped back to the UK where the offices are then built. Cycles of life eh.
<aside> 🗑️ Incorporate waste management plans, audits, advisory panels, and education into complex projects. Eliminate single-use items such as water bottles from exhibitions and encourage reuse of exhibition materials for future projects or donate leftover materials to art schools or studios before resorting to recycling. A database of Material Sharing & Reuse Platforms can be found here. Opt for non-toxic ink and recycled unbleached paper when printing.
