Artists are funny things, I mean we obviously all come in a variety of shapes and sizes just like the rest of the population but when the report came out to say artists are on like £2.60 per hour, I looked around at my friends and thought, well yeah, obvs. There’s clearly many exceptions to this and a lot of artists are doing alright financially and a lot are clever and have worked out their art / life / money balance.
I’ve made a lot of work about money, and how to try and get that balance. To fund my Masters I sold each day of my course for £55.88 which is what it cost me and in return you would get an artwork waiting for you on your doorstep on your chosen day. The slightly simpler way of doing things is to pay artists…
<aside> 👛 If it’s part of your remit then pay artists; artists are generally severely underpaid as backed up by the 2023 Structurally F-cked Report. Also if you are commissioning artists, help finance and support any points in their environmental responsibility rider and cover train expenses and the extra time it takes for artists who opt for slower forms of travel.
